Where it Lands: Portraits of Litter in Philadelphia

I began making photographs in support of my memory. I wanted a record of the people that are essential to me, the important events of my life, and the beautiful places I encountered along the way. In developing the film and my aesthetic I cropped out everything that didn’t fit into these categories. Now I prefer to look for the subject matter that I would have previously cropped out; I am engaged in an effort to make photographs that might be considered beautiful, but are also useful as a record of what we’re doing to our environment, and what that might say about us.

My approach with this project is to meet litter in situ, untouched, unposed, and uncropped. I document the litter and surroundings up close at ground level. These images record what we buy, and what we do with the purchases when we're finished with them.
